POSH Training for Employees: Content, Format and Rollout Choices

POSH training for employees should cover harassment, complaints, the Internal Committee and retaliation. Compare live, e-learning and video, and plan rollout.

POSH training for employees should cover what counts as sexual harassment under the 2013 Act, how and where to complain, what the Internal Committee does, protection from retaliation and what bystanders and managers must do. Format and rollout then follow from who the learners are: their language, their shift pattern and how you'll prove they finished.

The law sets the duty to run awareness programmes at regular intervals; it doesn't set a format, length or frequency. Those are your choices, made per audience and confirmed with counsel.

What Does the POSH Act Require Employers to Train?

Section 19 of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 asks every employer to organise workshops and awareness programmes at regular intervals to sensitise employees to the Act, and to run orientation programmes for Internal Committee members. The Act and its 2013 Rules are published on the Ministry of Skill Development site among other official copies.

Two later developments raise the stakes on evidence. In May 2023 the Supreme Court, in Aureliano Fernandes v State of Goa, directed employers and authorities to conduct orientation programmes, workshops and awareness programmes regularly (S.S. Rana). From July 2025, the Companies (Accounts) Second Amendment Rules ask companies to report complaints received, disposed of and pending beyond 90 days in the board's report (SCC Online).

This section explains the law in outline; it's not legal advice. Counsel should confirm how the Act, the Rules and any state or sector rules apply to your workplaces.

What Should POSH Training for Employees Cover?

An employee module should answer six questions in plain language, drawn from your own approved policy:

  • What sexual harassment means under the Act, including the forms of unwelcome conduct it lists.
  • Where the workplace begins and ends: offices, sites, travel, client premises, chat groups and remote work, as your policy defines them.
  • How to raise a complaint: committee members, contact routes and the time limits the Act sets.
  • What happens next: inquiry, confidentiality and interim relief.
  • Protection from retaliation, and why a complaint that can't be proved is not, by itself, false.
  • What a colleague who witnesses harassment should do.

Managers need that core plus guidance on responding when someone confides in them, why they must not investigate alone and how retaliation can creep in through rosters or appraisals. Committee members need a separate orientation on inquiry procedure, natural justice and report writing, closer to legal training than awareness.

Which Format Works for Which Audience?

Video or e-learning suits employee awareness at scale, while live sessions suit managers and committee members who need discussion. The table compares the three common options.

FormatWorks best forWatch out for
Live workshopManagers, committee members, small teamsHard to repeat consistently across shifts, cities and languages
E-learning module in the LMSDesk staff who already use the LMSLow attention if it is text on slides; completion reporting must work
Short training videoFrontline and multilingual teams, new joiners, refreshersNeeds approved scripts and review in every language version

Many organisations blend them: a video or e-learning core for everyone, then live sessions for managers and the committee. Scenarios carry the learning in any format. Write them from approved policy, keep them realistic and leave out graphic detail. Our earlier piece on POSH training video decisions covers scripting, AI presenters and sign-off for the video part.

How Should You Roll Out POSH Training Across Languages and Shifts?

A POSH rollout works when every covered worker gets the content in a language they read, through a channel they can reach, with a record kept. Plan it in this order.

First, list every audience. The Act's definition of employee includes temporary, contract, trainee and apprentice workers, so agency staff and interns belong in the plan alongside payroll employees.

Then decide languages. A plant in Pune and a store team in Chennai might need Marathi and Tamil versions, and each version needs a fluent reviewer from HR or legal. Our guide to training video localisation for Indian teams explains how to plan language versions and approvals.

Next, match delivery to working patterns. Desk teams can take a module in the LMS. Shift workers may watch a short video on a shared screen before a shift, or open a QR code or WhatsApp link to a hosted page, with a supervisor recording attendance.

Finally, schedule refreshers and new-joiner sessions. New joiners should meet the core content during induction, not months later at the next annual round.

How Do You Prove Employees Completed POSH Training?

Proof of POSH training is a dated, per-person record that an auditor or court could read without you rebuilding it. Useful fields are the training date, module version and language, completion or attendance, a knowledge-check score where used, and the trainer or module owner.

For LMS delivery, agree the package format and reports you need, then test them on your actual platform before release. For live and on-floor sessions, use signed or digital attendance sheets tied to employee IDs. The committee's annual report should be able to state how many workshops or awareness programmes ran, so keep a simple session log as you go.

Where Probbit Fits

Probbit produces compliance and POSH training videos for Indian teams: scripts written from your approved policy, scenarios reviewed by your HR and legal leads, and language versions scoped for each audience. Delivery timing depends on approved source material, scope, languages and review rounds, so we confirm it in the project brief. If you're planning a rollout, schedule a call and bring your policy and audience list.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is POSH training mandatory every year in India?

The POSH Act requires awareness programmes "at regular intervals" but doesn't fix a yearly frequency. Many employers choose an annual refresher plus induction training for new joiners, because that schedule is easy to evidence and keeps pace with turnover. Agree the frequency your policy commits to with counsel, then follow it consistently.

How long should POSH training for employees be?

The Act sets no minimum duration. An employee awareness module needs enough time to cover the definition, the complaint route, the committee, retaliation and bystander action, with scenarios and a short check. Manager and committee sessions run longer because they add practice and procedure. Size each version to its content, not to a target number of minutes.

Can POSH training be done online for employees?

Yes. The Act asks for workshops and awareness programmes without requiring them to be in person, so e-learning and video are common for employee awareness. Keep live or interactive sessions for managers and committee members, where discussion matters, and make sure online delivery produces completion records you can retrieve later.

Should managers get different POSH training from employees?

Managers should take the employee core plus extra content on receiving disclosures, not investigating alone, preventing retaliation and supporting the formal process. Internal Committee members need a separate orientation on inquiry procedure, which Section 19 of the Act names as its own requirement.

How do employers prove staff attended POSH training?

Keep dated records for each person: module version and language, completion or attendance, any assessment score and who delivered it. Store LMS reports, attendance sheets and a log of sessions held, because the committee's annual report counts awareness programmes and auditors or courts may ask for proof.
